Evaluation

During the planning and production of these media products I have encountered many problems and have also learnt a great deal about magazines and the media in general.
I set out to design and create a rock/metal magazine similar to ‘Kerrang’ or ‘Rock Sound’. This type of magazine is aimed at males around 14 – 24. I believe that my media product follows the conventions of existing music magazines for this genre. For example, the main colours and imagery that I have used throughout my product agree with what I discovered from my research into other rock/metal magazines. This type of magazine usually uses darker colours with an overlay of brighter colours to provide an eye catching page to the readers. Also, I think my front cover is very suitable for this type of magazine, the image is very appropriate as it uses people from the target audience that have that ‘band look’, which is very appealing to the target audience.

The front cover uses many conventional methods of attracting its audience. Along the top there is a black news banner simply stating names of bands featured in the magazine, each name is split up by an interesting red nautical star. The title & logo is set in a black box with a bright yellow outline. This transparency of this box has been enough to allow you to see through it to reveal the rest of the wall behind the models. The logo was originally in the same colour to the title, I decided to change it to a brighter gold that fades into black to make it stand out more and a little more interesting. I think that the picture I have used for the front cover is very appropriate and doesn’t contain any patterns or colours that are too confusing. The main feature that goes across the middle of the picture stands out very well I think and provide a lot of information in just a glance. For this I used the ‘Stencil’ font in a bright red, which I think adds a really effective touch.
The other features below this are displayed in a bright yellow which stands out very well also. These headlines are relevant and use powerful text to make it seem more encouraging by using strong words (e.g. exclusive) and also by using weird quotes (“I used the sound of a dying pig”) to make the reader want to read on. Below the headings for these, there is also additional information to encourage the reader to find out more.
At the bottom of the page there is also an additional new banner which states that it has the first exclusive review for a new album, with the use of red nautical stars again to attract people to read this area.

The contents page lists all the features and bands used very effectively, which is the norm for this type of magazine. This page uses images of people of both genders, which makes it appealing to both sexes. The colours used on this page are generally quite dark with bright yellow and white text overlaying it. This makes it very easy for the audience to read. On the band list, I made it easier to decipher by switching between yellow & white text on each line below. I think some of the text used is very similar to what you would find in existing media products.

The double-page spread follows the usual conventions of rock/metal magazines also. The pictures used are simple pictures of someone being interviewed. These photos are intended to provide the reader with a strong image of this star being in an alternative/punk band. To establish this I added in props such as a new era hat, sunglasses, cigarettes and skate/surf wear. The name ‘Connor Chaos’ is also used to represent him as a punk/skater. The text used for this page is also intended to give over this image. I used ‘Times New Roman’ for the questions and answers throughout the interview on the page as it is easy to read and a very respectable font; I changed the colour of the text for the questions (gold) and answers (white) to make it much easier to follow. For the quotes on this page I used ‘Eras Bold ITC’ in white as it really stands out and catches the reader’s eye. At the top of the page I have placed a box for the title and the logo; I used ‘Broadway’ in white for the title as its relatively bold and fits in with the rest of the page. The logo gives the page a more of an official touch. The background for this double page spread is a checkerboard pattern that was originally going to be black and white; this appeared to be too confusing at a glance though so it was changed to black & grey. In the bottom corner I added in a small advert from the magazine to encourage people to learn more about this ‘band’ and increase their exposure, just like other magazines of this genre tend to do.

I think this media product represents people that like this type of music (social groups such as rockers, metal heads, skaters etc) as the typical stereotype with a little added. There is imagery throughout of older teenagers hanging around in scabby, dirty urban places like skate parks and phone boxes for example. The typical stereotypes for people of these social groups generally are known to have tattoos & piercings and stay out until late at night. Buying this type of magazine is supposed to make them feel as if they belong to this social group, as if they are a part of something.

The main audience for this product would also actually be such social groups as metal heads and skaters. Usually males between fourteen and twenty-four years old.
I think the type of media institution that might distribute my product would be a relatively unknown/underground media group. These are the type of places that usually distribute such magazines as this. The publisher of Rock Sound, ‘Editions Freeway’, is a good example of this. There are also more commercial places like ‘IPC media’ and ‘EMAP media’, but they generally only take on established magazines.

During the designing and production of this product I have learned a lot about the methods of producing magazines. I have mainly discovered most about photography and digital image software. I now realise just how important the mise en scencé and background is in each photograph. I have also learned a lot about digital publishing software and how important it is to have everything pre-set to exactly how you want it. I have also built up a greater understanding of how to use such digital editing software as ‘Jasc Paint Shop Pro’ and ‘Microsoft Publisher’.

When I look back at my preliminary excercise, I realise how much better it could have been if I had the knowledge about this as I do now. For example, the quality of the camera. I used a simple portable camera (Pentax Optio 50) for the preliminary task, whereas, for this I used a digital SLR (Nikon D40) which delivers a much richer, higher quality image in comparison. Also I have realised how much better the pictures will come out after being touched up on digital editing software.

When you look at the front covers, there is a vast improvement:
---------

Overall, I think my media product addresses and attracts the right audience effectively and allows readers to easily browse through. The imagery and colours displayed throughout are appropriate, the titles and fonts used are relevant and respectable. It also represents its audience correctly and also uses a very suitable colour theme (yellow, white & black) throughout.

All Pages

This is the final version of the front cover.
Ithink it delivers alot of information very quickly and effectively, and it is also very appealing to the intended audience.

This is the final version of the contents page.
I think this addresses the audience in a very conventional way and is easy to understand.
This is the final version of the Double Page spread.
I think this follows the conventions of exsisting media products as the way it is layed out is very to similar to that in NME and Kerrang etc.
Final Copy of the 'Extra page'.
I think this page really provides a strong image about social groups that listen to rock/metal music and fits in well with exsisting similar products.
Throughout the magazine I have kept to a strong colour theme yellow, white & black.

Extra Page Pictures =]

The extra page will feature a short interview type thing called 'The Ramdom Question Generator' where strange and odd questions about rockstars lifestyles will be asked.

I think these pictures represent the person in the interview as being rebellious and 'In your face' which is exatly what the audience are after for thsi type of magazine.

One of these photos will be the background for this page, as the model is placed to one side at the bottom, it provides lots of space for any text around it.

Contents Page Pictures =]

These are some of the pictures that I might possibly use on the conents page, there are only 2 spaces on this page for photos though, so I'll have to decide which ones are the best suited.

Front Page pictures =]

I actually took 27 pictures for the front cover, but I've narrowed it down to the best 5.
It was difficult to allow for the right amount of space above for the title, and leave space below for any other text.

I think I will probably use the 3rd on down as it is closer in and leaves just about the right amount of space above and below for any text.

Interview Pictures =]

These are the pictures I will use for the double page spread (interview with 'Connor Chaos')

These pictures were all taken at my friends house which I thought was perfect as the walls are white, there is plently of light and the settee used is like you'd see in interviews from NME or Kerrang.
There are three spaces to fill on the double page spread with these pictures.

Double-Page Spread & Extra Page Content.

This is possibly the text I will use for the double-page spread interview.

Loud! Magazine. Connor Chaos.

Loud! Managed to catch Connor Chaos for a quick chat before he flew off for his next show.
‘So, we hear rumours that you could be playing the UK festivals this year, is that true?’

‘Well, I can’t really say anything on it now, nothings confirmed yet, but we do really hope that we’ll be able to play a few of them again this year yeah!’

‘We’ve also been hearing that you’ve been playing some new material at your recent shows, does this mean a new album is coming our way?’

‘Yeah, hopefully...we’ve been working on some new stuff for the last few months and so far it’s all sounding really good. The new tracks seem to be going down really well with the crowd at the moment as well so I guess that’s another good sign.’

‘Can you give us any other details about this new album then? Release dates? Title?

‘We were thinking of naming it after this weird drink we tried in Japan on our last tour. It was insane; after you’ve had a tiny amount of it you can’t even remember your name, where you come from, anything. This stuff was called 頭脳のゆが, which when translated, is quite rightly named ‘Brain Distortion’. The same effect this album will have on you!'

‘Excellent news, also the fact Living Cult has been nominated for 3 Loud! Awards this year, how do you feel about that?

‘Oh yeah it has, we were so excited at being nominated for one last year....but this year, three! That’s just crazy; we’re all over the moon on for it.

‘If you win, how are you going to celebrate?

‘I can’t even imagine whether what we do would be good or bad. We'll probably have a huge party and I think we’ll put another 20% on top of the 110% we already give it live.

‘We’re all already excited for that here at Loud!, looking forward to seeing you guys again

sometime soon. Thanks.

This is also a possible layout for the double page spread.

This is possibly the text I will use for my extra page:
Loud Magazine! Roddy Stone

'If you could have any magical powers, what would they be?'

"Definately the ability to fly! It would be great, I could just drop down in for a gig and then fly straight off to the bar. I've always secretly wanted to be superman!"

'What is your favorite sport?'

"Well, I'm the leat active person I can think off!, I used to skateboard when I was little.....until I broke my leg.....That taught me a lesson.

'Whats the best thing you can cook?'

"Does Beans on toast count?"

'How many instruments can you play?'

"Two I guess, I play the guitar but my main passion will always be the drums, that stool is wehere I feel most comfortable, I love it!"

'When was the last time you broke the law?'

"Technically, about ten minutes ago when I parked next to that sign that said 'positively no parking her at any time' haha. Pretty smooth"

Recent work...

I have decided on the layout of my front cover.
It will be similar to 'Idea 4'.

This will basically include three people dressed as rockstar. The person in the centre will be standing ahead of the others.
I have three models ready to be photograped in an urban setting for this front cover.

Shot list:

  • Front Cover - Three people standing together (as a band). One person in front, revealing two other people over each shoulder. The back two models will be staring towards the sky with a blank expression. Front model will smile at the camera.
  • Contents Page - One model sitting in an urban/scabby area (possibly a skatepark or playground). Another picture of a second model standing in front of a wall smiling towards the camera.
  • Double-page spread - Interview pictures, basically just some pictures the 'rockstar' being interviewed. Should just be relaxing in a chilled evvironment, sitting on a sette having a beer and a smoke.

I have also carried out some pricing research.
I asked a variety of people, different ages 'on average, how much would you pay for a music magazine'
    they answered:
  • £2.00 (Nick - 17yrs)
  • £1.60 (Liam - 18yrs)
  • £3.00 (Sarah - 18yrs)
  • £2.50 (Sean - 28yrs)
  • £2.30 (Alan - 42yrs)
  • £2.20 (Jess - 19yrs)
  • £1.80 (Freya - 13yrs)

Most music magazines cost between £2.20 - £3.80. Although some specialist music magazines (Rhythm, DJ, Total Guitar etc) do cost alot more (up to £5.50)

Front Cover - Analysis 3

This is a copy of the 'New Musical Express' Magazine.

1 - Top Banner.
This top banner basically informs the reader that there is a free CD with this issue. They also boast that the tracks on this CD are 'Hand-picked by Muse'
To really catch the readers eye for this they have used an orange background with huge capital bold white text.

2 - 'Official Wembley Preview Issue'.
This suggests to the reader that they have had inside access to know what kind of a show they are planning to put on.
This would have interested many people as this show has been named by many as 'The Best Gig In History'. This was also the first show at the new Wembley Arena, which could have attracted many people to find out more about this place.

3 - 'NME' logo & Slogan
The NME logo is quite vibrant and easily recognisable. For this issue they have set the picture to overlay the logo slightly, but still enough to be recognisable.

4 - Image.
They have used an image of the main band they seem to be focusing on in this issue ('Muse').
This would suggest that this issue is aimed at 15 - 30 year old as 'Muse' tend to be for more mature audiences.
This image has been set out in such a way that it looks as if Matt (Lead singer of 'Muse') is holding the free CD.

5 - Main Feature/Free CD.
The free CD is located in the middle of the magazine cover to make it stand out more, they have also added Muse's logo onto the front of the CD.
In the top corner they have included a quote from Muse saying 'We'll be listening to this before we go onstage', this has probably been placed there to inspire other musicians to buy this magazine for the CD, so they can listen to it also.
They have also included a list of bands that are on the CD. This will allow readers to quickly browse through the band names and see if there are any they are fans of.

6 - Barcode.
This has been placed in a convenient place towards the bottom corner to allow them to fit all the necessary information around it easily.

7 - Bottom Banner.
This is the only part of the front cover that is not related to either the CD or Muse. This basically gives a round up of 'other features' in the magazine. It uses a black background with vibrant red text on top to make it very eye catching to the reader.

8 - Exclusive New Material.
This CD boasts a new track from Muse that was 'specially recorded last week' for NME. They have placed this as orange text over a black background, which looks very effective.

Front Cover - Analysis 2

This is the January issue of 'Rock Sound'

1 - Top Banner.
This top banner is quite effective.
This offers the reader a basic brief of some of the features in this issue.
It also shows that there is a free CD with this copy.
As the background is black the writing is white. This makes it very eye catching.
The 'Free CD' part of the banner is in a bright yellow font which has also been underlined, this will emphasise this point to the reader.

2 - Title & Slogan.
The 'Rock Sound' logo is placed right at the top of the cover. Also very bright white, capital, bold text is used. The font is quite simple to allow people to easily read and recognise.

3 - Main Features.
The image used on the front cover is linked into the main feature. They have used a quote from the interview that they have advertised on the front cover.
To make it more vibrant and eye catching they have also added the band's logo.
The photo they have used for the front cover is of Frank Carter, lead singer of the popular english band 'Gallows' This picture and band would suggest that they are targeting customers around 14 - 25 year olds. The image used suggests a 'hardcore' image to the magazine.

4 - Free Extras.
The magazine offers free posters which makes the reader belive they are getting something extra for their money.

5 - Barcode.
They have placed the barcode at the bottom of the page in an easily accessible area for the shops to be able to scan with ease.

6 - Other Features.
They have listed other bands that are featured in this issue to allow readers to simply browse through the brand names. This will encourage them to buy it more if they see any bands that they like.

Front Cover - Analysis

This is the front cover of a Kerrang! magazine.

1 - Top Banner.
This banner is extremly effective as it stands out from the rest of the page and delivers lots of information in a quick glance.
As the background for this banner is a dark green, they have chosen to use capital bold text to make it stand out to the reader very easily.

2 - Magazine logo & Slogan.
The 'Kerrang!' logo is quite large and eye catching, this helps to make it easily recognisable in just a glance.

3 - Free extras.
They have given a space of the front cover over to show that you will get free posters with the magazine, this will make the reader feel as if they are getting something extra for their money.

4 - Other Features.
This is just basically a small list of other bands featured in this issue.
Readers will be able to quickly browse through these bands and if they see any that they particulary like, it will encourage them to buy the magazine.

5 - Barcode.
The barcode has been placed at the bottom to allow for the shops to be able to quickly scan.

6 - Main Feature.
The main feature advertised on the front cover is an interview with Ville Valo from HIM.
This would suggest that the target audience is mostly teenagers as HIM are generally associated with 13 - 20 year olds.

Possible Logos?

Heres a few logos that I sketched that could possibly be used for my music magazine.

Double Page Spread - Analysis 2

1. - Feature/content

This is a double page spread from 'Kerrang!'.
This features an interview with the band 'Slayer'.
Mainly involving images and text.

2. - Target Audience.

Slayer are a popular american thrash metal band also.
They formed in the early 80's, Meaning that this interview might possibly attract older readers.

3. - Use Of Colours

The main colours used here are white, black & green.
The background is white which makes the other colours very powerful and stand out.
The white background contasts with the dark text making it very clear to read.

4. - Images.

'Kerrang!' has only used one image for this interview.
This contains the lead singer and guitarist. Also this picture has been taken in black & white.

5. - Text

The text used in this is all for questions & answers.
They have used very simple fonts such as 'Times New Roman' and 'Arial'
Even for the quotes they have enlarged, simple font styles have been used.
The language involved is very informal and also contains some swearing and slang words.
This suggests that this article is aimed at younger readers aswell as older readers.
The questions have been highlighted in green to ensure the reader can cleraly understand that these are the questions.

6. - Layout

The layout of this interview is very simple.
The band picture covers all of the left hand page
There is a green borderline that runs across the top of the page which helps emphasise the article and make it much more eye-catching.
The right hand page is used for text mostly.

Double Page Spread - Analysis 1

1. - Feature/content.

This is a double page spread from 'Kerrang!'.
They have chosen to feature an interview section with Metallica.
This mainly involves pictures and text.

2. - Target Audience.

Metallica is a famous, American metal band from the 80's.
As they are an older band, this might attract older readers.

3. - Use Of Colours

The main colours involved here are black, white and grey. This is quite a bland use of colours, but as this is a metal band who would generally be associated with darker colours, this has probably been chosen specifically.

4. - Images

The images used are mainly close-up pictures of the members of Metallica. These are placed stratigically around the text. Each of the questions also has a picture of the person asking the question.

5. - Text

The text is mainly questions and answers.
When there is a grey background, black text is used, whereas, when a black background is used, white text is placed over it. This makes the text stand out from the page and alot easier to read.
The language used throughout this interview is very informal and contains lots of slang words. This suggests that it is aimed at a younger age range.

6. - Layout

This has a very simple but effective layout.
Its basically two pictures with surrounding text boxes to fill any space, Also there is a vertical black border across the right side of the page that has a much darker background than the rest of the article, which makes it stand out quite effectively.

Today.

Today, I have decided on the title and slogan of my magazine (Loud Magazine - Turn it up, keep it loud), and I'm currently creating a logo.

I have also started the planning for my double-page spread.

This will contain an interview with a rock star. This will include pictures of the star being interviewed and show text with the questions and answers.

Similar to that done in Kerrang:

Usually on these types of double page spreads they show a few pictures of the band/artist being interviewed. They then slot in the text (questions and answers) around these pictures.

The last few days.

Over the past few days I have been researching exsisting rock/metal magazines to gain an understanding of how the images, text and names are relevant to their readers.

After analysing these exsisting magazines, I have found that the target auidence is:
  • Mainly males
  • Ages 14-24
  • Low-Mid Class

Using this information I was able to write a breif specification for my magazine:

Type Of Music - Rock/Metal/Alternative

Audience - Mainly males, ages 14-24

I have also been trying to figure out a catchy, relevant name for the magazine.

I came up with three possible names, but cannot decide which one to use just yet.

  • Loud! Magazine
  • Amplified

  • Distortion

Also, I have designed some intial Ideas for the front cover:

Now, I'm goning to choose the right layout for the front cover and make a plan of whats going to be on the front cover (e.g image, text, font style, effects etc).

After I have decided this, I will be able to make sketches of what it might look like and create a mock images on the computer. Also, I will be able to select a location for the picture to be taken and the people to be used for it.
